Is it worth opening MEI for extra income? The full review
MEI for freelancer, courier, or app driver. When formalization makes financial sense and when it is just cost without return.
The right MEI question for extra income
Most people ask "should I open MEI?" when the right question is another: "how much am I losing by not having MEI?"
This change in perspective reveals a more honest calculation. MEI costs R$ 80,90/month. But it also delivers CNPJ, invoice, INSS and access to credit. The question is, for your extra income level, are these benefits worth more than R$ 80,90?

Frequently asked questions
Can I open MEI if I already have INSS for the job?
Yes. Having CLT does not prevent being MEI. The two coexist. MEI's INSS would be a complementary contribution, but not mandatory if you already have CLT coverage.
Does MEI protect in the event of an accident at work?
Yes, but only after 12 months of uninterrupted contribution. Temporary disability allowance (formerly called sick pay) covers accident or sick leave.
Do I need an accountant for MEI?
No. MEI is designed to be self-sufficient. DAS is paid online, the invoice is issued by the city hall portal, and the annual DASN is made on the gov.br portal. Accountant is not required — but it can help if you have questions.
Can I cancel MEI if it doesn't work?
Yes. Cancellation (low) is free, done online at gov.br/mei. Before canceling, clear the outstanding DAS so as not to generate active debt.
