How many hours a day does the Uber driver need to work to make a profit?

There is a minimum number of hours below which the driver works for free or even loses money. Find out what yours is.

The break-even concept: the time you stop paying and start earning

Every driver has a daily break-even point — the number of hours from which he starts to actually make a profit. Below that point, he is working to pay for the car costs.

How to calculate break-even hours

Formula:

Hours to cover costs = Daily fixed costs ÷ Net revenue per hour

Example: Diego in Porto Alegre

Diego has a rental car (R$ 1.500/month), averages R$ 25/h net after platform commission:

  • Fixed rental cost: R$ 1.500 ÷ 22 days = R$ 68,18/day
  • Fuel (23 km/h, R$ 0,57/km): ~R$ 65/day (estimated for 8h)
  • Maintenance (included in rent): R$ 0
  • Total fixed + variable costs estimated for 8h: ~R$ 133/day
  • With net revenue of R$ 25/h:

    R$ 133 ÷ R$ 25 = 5.3 hours to cover costs

Diego only starts to make a real profit from the 5th hour and 18 minutes of work. The first 5:30 am is to pay the costs.

Use ethanol instead of gasolineReduces break-even in ~30–60 min
Swap rental car for ownCan reduce in 1–2 hours
Working at peak hoursRevenue/hour rises → break-even falls
    City with heavy traffickm/h drops → fuel/h rises → break-even rises

The trap of the few hours

Drivers who work just 4–5 hours a day in average-cost cities are often at a loss or at zero. The lucrative part of the journey is just in the last hours.
